STONEY CREEK ALUMNI

On Thursday April 25, 2013, Stoney Creek Graduate ERIC FISHER was selected as the 1st Overall Pick in the NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs Football Organization. Thursday marked the culmination of several years

of hard work by Eric to get himself ready for the NFL.  Not only did he excel beyond all expectations - but through hardwork he elevated his stock in the draft from being on a few teams radar to that of the 1st pick

overall within a matter of a few months.

In the short time that Stoney Creek High School has been in existance, it is quite humbling to realize that a student athlete of this status once walked the halls of this school. Just to know that Eric was drafted, knowing an opportunity at the NFL level was afforded him was the best a school or community could ask for.  Eric's

stock vaulted up the draft board to the point of being projected to be a 1st round pick, then as the #1 pick overall.  After an exciting nine minutes, of waiting for the announcement from the Kansas City Cheifs, Eric now moves on to the next stage of his career knowing that he is one of a very few individuals that can say they

were the #1 Overall Pick of any NFL draft and for this community to share in the fact that many of those opportunities were started on the high school fields and gymnasiums of Stoney Creek High School, it is still

quite remarkable.

This is a great moment of recognition for the school, the entire staff, the coaches and teachers that had the opportunity to be a part of Eric's daily routine and the Rochester Community School District.  This may be a once in a lifetime event and it is something that the entire community is very proud of and will relish for many years to come.

Eric was always a great representative of what a high school student/athlete should be known for during his years of high school and what has molded him as a great person early in life has continued to do so as he

continued to better himself at the next challenge that life is bring him.

Basketball Service Project - www.BedsideHealers.com

Posted Feburary 19, 2014

(Rochester Hills, Michigan) – The Stoney Creek High School boys varsity basketball team is committed to making a difference both on and off the court. On Thursday, February 13, they will donate Bedside Healers™ to patients at Crittenton Hospital. Bedside Healers™ are unique and innovative stuffed animals with Velcro straps that patients can easily attach to beds, IV poles, wheelchairs, etc. Members of the team, along with coaches, will present these cuddly creatures at Crittenton Hospital on February 13. Each year the Stoney Creek H.S. team works on a service project. According to head coach Steve Norgrove, “Basketball games come and go, but my real job as a coach is to mentor young men. In doing so, every year we work on a service project to instill an ‘attitude of gratitude’ amongst the team. This year, Bedside Healers provided us with the opportunity to provide some comfort to the children at Crittenton Hospital. I am very proud of my team.” The basketball team is in the midst of finishing up a very successful regular season schedule with a 10-3 record. The team will be taking time away from their busy practice and game schedule to make this donation in person at Crittenton Hospital. Bedside Healers is a local company, founded two years ago by metro Detroit resident Jason Peach following his father’s extended hospital stay. Since then, Bedside Healers has donated nearly 1,500 of these stuffed animals to hospitals throughout the country. The company is also host to an online site, The Community, where people who are sick, have been sick, or are taking care of sick people, can come together to communicate and support each other. It is the company’s next step in its mission to “always be there.”

Athletics at Stoney Creek High School: My Life’s Stepping Stones

Although I did not know it, the first day that I set foot on the wrestling mat of Stoney Creek High School was the first day of a long, life-changing journey.  Four seasons of hard work and determination have incredibly bent and shaped me into the man that I am today.  The journey has been exciting, educating, painful, and encouraging.  After persevering through four hard seasons, some may ask me, “What has competing in interscholastic athletics at Stoney Creek High School meant for you?”.

2010 was the year that I first began my journey as a Stoney Creek athlete.  I was the little fish in the big pond on the wrestling mat; inexperienced, ignorant, and overwhelmed.  Day after day, practice after practice, my more-experienced teammates seemed like undefeatable giants.  Freshman year was a rough and discouraging season.

By the beginning of my sophomore season, I was ready to give wrestling one more shot. I had gained some wrestling experience through unofficial practices over the course of the summer, and was ready to get back on the mat.  To my surprise, I was a significantly better wrestler than the previous season.  My work in the off-season had paid off, and I was no longer the little fish in the pond.  I then realized the importance of my hard work.  It was then that I decided I will not have an off-season, because I would be continuously training throughout the year for next season.

Over the course of my Junior & Senior year, wrestling was my passion.  I had devoted countless hours to becoming a better wrestler, and as a result, I had become the big fish in the pond.  My dedication and perseverance had caught my coach’s attention, because by my senior year, I was captain of the team.

My long journey has carved me into the man that I am today.  Beginning as an overwhelmed freshman, I had transformed into my team’s leader through countless hours of hard work.  So, what has wrestling at Stoney Creek meant for me?  It has given me the skills necessary to go about life successfully.  I now know how to overcome obstacles, work with a team, and never quit.  Thank you, Stoney Creek wrestling, for preparing me for life.

NATALIE VOSS

My water bottles are in the garbage, my jersey is put away, my name is on the record board, my poster is hanging on the wall, and it is all over.  I have left my mark, and it is time to move on.  Competing in interscholastic athletics at Stoney Creek High School has meant teacher, family, and home to me for the past four years.  It is somewhere I feel comfortable and somewhere I feel I belong.  It has truly shaped me into the person I am today, and has taught me more than I could ever put into words.  It is through this sense of family that I have learned so much, and for that I am so thankful.

It is not possible to count all of the hours I have spent in the Stoney Creek High School gym.  Reflecting on how many summer open gyms, volleyball two-a-days, summer camps, after school practices, Saturday morning practices, and games, it really has been a lot.  It has become my home away from home.  Throughout my four years of high school, I have participated in junior varsity volleyball, two years of varsity volleyball, and four years of varsity basketball.  I have seen wins, losses, and championships.  All this time and effort has taught me something.  It has taught me dedication and an unparalleled work ethic.  I have learned to tackle whatever life throws at me, and to tackle it with full force.  To me, this is what it means to be a part of the Stoney Creek athletic family.  This is a family that pushes each other to accomplish goals with a sense of drive and motivation.  I have always felt a need to stretch for my goals, but have also always had a supporting family of coaches, teammates, and other important individuals to fall back on.  None of my success would be possible without these people.  Another important part of my sense of family within Stoney Creek athletics has been my teammates.  Looking back on past years, thinking about all of the different teams I have been a part of, and all of the people I have met, I have come across so many amazing friends.  To me, Stoney Creek athletics is a place full of people like me, with similar aspirations.  I am so thankful for all the life-long friends and connections I have made, and the doors Stoney Creek sports have opened.

It is only after my Stoney Creek interscholastic athletic experience, looking back upon it, that I am able to see just how much I have grown.  What I have been a part of and what I have accomplished seems amazing.  In the future, when people ask me what I did in high school, this is what I will remember.  None of this would be possible without the support and life lessons learned from Stoney Creek athletics.  I could not have asked for a better family to spend my four years of high school with.

CONGRATULATIONS to our 2014 Stoney Creek High School Athletic Booster Scholar-Athlete Award Winners, Natalie Voss and Jon Quigley.
